Mont St Michel rises from the surrounding bay as a structure seemingly beyond its reality, rising to the heavens. It emerges from the bay, sometimes an island, sometimes not, with the large tides creating sand flats over vast areas of land. Continue reading “Mont St Michel”
Prague Train Stations
The Prague underground stations surprised this traveler with a common theme employed in their construction. The first impression is one of a blocky, soviet-style architecture and of course the inclination is to dismiss this as a somewhat inelegant, blocky, perhaps overdone, building style given the minimalist modes and elegant lines of modern construction. Looking more closely at the architecture, you realise this presumption is both ill-considered and, dare I admit, uncouth! Continue reading “Prague Train Stations”
St Vitus Cathedral, Prague
St Vitus Cathedral in Prague is (currently) the worlds most recent gothic cathedral, begun in 1344 in late gothic style, finally consecrated in 1929. As such, it features a mixture of late-gothic, baroque, renaissance architectural styles, and stain-glass windows from as recent as the early 20th century by Alfons Mucha, Prague’s most celebrated artist in the last century. Prague Views
A collection of images of the people and sites of Prague, Czech Republic. Prague is built around the River Vltava. On the east side of the river is the old town, with town squares and narrow streets typical of medieval towns in Europe. On the west side, lies the castle precinct, with its protective and forbidding construction and centrepiece, the St Vitus Cathedral. Continue reading “Prague Views”
Salzburg Views
Salzburg is a city in Austria, and perhaps most known as the birthplace and home of Mozart. The city is built around the Salzach River, with a large castle dominating the hills on the south side of the River. It is a charming, small, city, with the alps a short distance away. Continue reading “Salzburg Views”
Schönbrunn Palace
Schönbrunn Palace is the summer palace for the Hapsburg dynasty. Today it lies on the outskirts of Vienna, but at its height it would have been outside of the main city. The palace is noted for its extraordinary gardens and pavilions, a small zoo and parklands. Continue reading “Schönbrunn Palace”
A view of Loch Ness
One of those moments where everything just seems to be right; beautiful light and still air to make the waters of the Loch smooth (with no sight of Nessie!). The panorama shot featured here gives you a sense of the view, but I think the diptych presented below would be my preference for how to present this view. Continue reading “A view of Loch Ness”
Hadrian’s Wall, England
Hadrian’s Wall extends from coast to coast, and this part of the wall at Cawfields Crags is the best preserved section of the wall remaining to us. Why did Hadrian build his walls?
